Fashion trends are cyclical. Every fashionista knows this. Time after time we have noticed that trends from 20 years ago pop up upon the runway and transition to the streets. Early 2000s trends have made a resurgence in the last year and we are in for it! Not only does it make us nostalgic, it helps brighten our day while the pandemic rages on.
So, what is Y2K?
Y2K refers to the fashion trends of the early 2000s, as well as the millennium computer glitch that messed up dates back in 2000.
Let us revisit our childhoods with some of these trends from the early 2000s making a comeback.
Baguette Bags
Although baguette bags have been around a while they aren’t going out of style soon. These mini bags are perfect for night outs and brunches. They go with everything and are remarkably easy to style. They were popularized by Carrie Bradshaw, one of the leads from the hit TV show ‘Sex and the City’.
Tennis Skirt
Tennis skirts have been seen on many celebrities lately. This breezy skirt is perfect to beat the heat. It can be paired with a simple crop top or a bikini top for a sunny day. The skirt can also be worn with an oversized sweatshirt and chunky sneakers for a minimalistic look.
Low Rise Jeans
Gone are the days when low-rise jeans were a thing of the past. Low-rise jeans have made an epic comeback this year. Celebrities like Bella Hadid, Gigi Hadid and Emily Ratajkowski have embraced this trend and bared their abs. This early 2000’s trend is here to stay.
Bucket Hats
We have seen a rise in bucket hats over the past year. Bucket hats come in all forms from faux fur, satin, nylon, denim, crochet, bedazzled, oversized, to printed. There’s something for everybody. What was once a hip-hop accessory is now a mainstream staple. Designers and high-street brands have taken a liking to producing this iconic accessory.
Crochet
If you use Instagram, chances are that you have come across bloggers and celebrities wearing tons of crochet. Crochet dresses, bucket hats, shorts, bikinis, handbags, vests, jackets and skirts are available to suit everyone’s needs. A full-blown crochet dress may not be your cup of tea but you can invest in a crochet bag or crochet bucket hat that may compliment your outfit without taking away all the attention.
Chunky Rings
Gold jewellery is out. Chunky rings are in. Who says so? Gen Z on TikTok. Colourful chunky rings have arisen again and is reminiscent of our childhood jewellery. The rings are made of glass enamel, acrylic and resin and are going to be your go-to accessory this season.
Beaded Necklaces
There's a beaded necklace for everyone, whether it's a single delicate strand or a stacked one. Mixed bead and pearl necklaces, as well as rainbow-colored round or floral bead necklaces, are massively popular among the Y2K fashion enthusiasts. You can also customize alphabet embossed beads to spell words, names, or even a cause that you support by stringing them together.
